Art Nouveau : A Creative Style
Pattern, shape, design and color are all elements that graphic designers of the 19th century took into consideration in their work. The man who influenced how graphic designers see a page, and how they use elements of design, died at the young age of 26 years. Oscar Wilde played a major role in the propagation of the Art Nouveau style, despite being a controversial personality and more directly associated with literature over art. He believed that art should not be limited by ethical or moral concerns. Wilde was drawn to Beardsley's style, which was much like his own writing style; rich, erotic and fanciful. Using a combination of pattern, distortion, sweeping linear shapes, and a dark eroticism, this illustrator created images for his story.
The interplay between black and white characterizes this dramatic work. This artist often used elegant patterns on a light surface, surrounded by heavy borders and negative space. His page is most often asymmetrical, and his movements are developed by big, unbroken meandering curves. Human characters in these drawings were generally created with deceptively simple outlines in contrast to the complexities of their environment and the objects that they interact with on paper. A renewed respect for medieval and early Renaissance decoration and design combined with a fascination with imports from Japan became a rich source of inspiration to many late 19th century designers. The artist's pieces were often copied in Europe and America and he gained notoriety due to illustrations having turned up in a series of renowned materials for circulation. Poster art slowly grew from what was a commercial advertising medium into its very own art form at the end of the 19th century. Posters were some of the first things to be printed in color, all of the books still being printed in black and white. Any text on the poster that conveyed information about the product began to take a back seat to the image. He knew that the audience's attention was more easily attracted to simplicity so he used vivid colors and flat, basic shapes. Later illustrators employed bolder, smoother lines, creating a style that evolved into what is now known as the Art Nouveau Poster Style. There was also a successful and famous art nouveau whose elegant posters featured rather narrow strips as well as a full length female figure. Patterns within these works are often inspired by fold art, Celtic works, Japanese woodcuts, mosaics from the Byzantine Era, Moorish & Arab decor, and the Hebrew alphabet.
