Getting An American Passport For The First Time? Read This.
Getting A United States Passport for the first time can be confusing, especially if you have no idea where to start. Don’t worry though, because we’ll be providing you with all the basic information you need to apply for a US passport. We’ll keep it as simple as possible, so read on and learn all about it.
Of course, you’ll need to fill out the passport application form before anything else. The form you’ll need is Form DS-11. Aside from people getting their first passports, this is also the type of form filled in by applicants who are under 16 years old, those who had their names changed after their last passport’s been issued, to name a few examples. Another thing you need to remember is that you will be required to appear personally when applying for a passport the first time.
Aside from the DS-11 form, there are special requirements for getting a New Passport if you are a minor. If you are under 16 years old, some of these requirements include your submission of proof of your US citizenship, as well as a proof of your relationship with your parents or guardians. Also, you would need to be accompanied by your parents if you are a minor applying for a passport.
Those between ages 16 and 17 also need to fulfill special requirements. To name some, you will be required to present a photocopy of the same ID you’ll present when applying for a passport, and a written parental consent. Ensure that you’re not missing any requirement by checking them before leaving for the passport agency’s office.
For applicants who are of legal age, you will only be asked for the completed DS-11, plus other documents that are normally required of all passport applicants. These are documents that aim to establish your identity as well as your citizenship. Only sign the DS-11 form once you are instructed to do so.
If you need a copy of the DS-11 form you can always download it from the US Department of State’s website. You can then print out the form and fill it in by hand. Alternatively, you can fill in the form online which saves you a lot of time. Once you’ve filled in the form, you will then have to submit it to the passport agency, along with the other required documents.
Processing your application may take somewhere between four to six weeks. This can be an unacceptable waiting period if you need to travel in less than a month’s time. The good thing is you can have your passport application expedited in special cases. For one, you can expedite the process if you need to travel to another country in less than two weeks or you need your passport in less than four weeks to apply for a foreign visa. Unless your case falls under these two, you may not be granted an expedited application of your passport.
